How to Install Hardwood Floors

As your local flooring experts, we always recommend choosing professional installers over doing the job yourself. You can trust our licensed contractors to get the job done right and on time for you.

Before your installation begins, our sales experts will come to your home and perform and free in-home measurement. Moisture testing is an important step before installation to make sure your subfloors can support hardwood flooring. A damp subfloor can cause damage to your hardwood over time if it is not tested. Our installers also check your subfloor to make sure it is flat, clean, dry and free of imperfections. After your new hardwood floor is installed, a gap should be left between the floor and the wall to allow the hardwood to naturally expand but no gaps between the planks to ensure a seamless finish.

The type of hardwood construction you choose can determine the type of installation you need, and vice versa. For example, solid hardwood should be nailed or glued down to the subfloor to ensure stability. Engineered hardwood comes in floating floor options which click together and do not require any adhesives. They can also be nailed to the subfloor for a more classic look.

Where Can Hardwood Be Installed?

Solid hardwood should be installed in cool, dry areas of your home and on the first two levels. The first two levels of your home include bedrooms, dining rooms, and living rooms. Solid hardwood flooring is more for looks than it is for functionality. Engineered hardwood can be installed on all levels of your home. Since engineered hardwood comes in most of the same options as solid, you can install them in kitchens, finished basements, hallways, and even bedrooms. You should avoid installing any type of hardwood in bathrooms.
